Decatur Families: A New Opportunity to Beautify and Strengthen Our Community
Decatur, Avondale Estates, Scottdale, East Lake, and our surrounding neighborhoods have a powerful new opportunity to grow, shine, and thrive. DeKalb County’s Community Development Department has opened applications for Community Beautification Grants, designed to help neighborhoods create cleaner, safer, more vibrant spaces for families and children.
These grants support projects that improve public spaces, enhance neighborhood pride, and strengthen the quality of life for residents. For families across Decatur, this is more than a beautification effort—it is an investment in the environments where our children learn, play, explore, and grow.
According to DeKalb County Community Development, the department’s mission is to create viable urban communities by improving public facilities, expanding community services, and supporting safe, suitable living environments for families.
Why Beautification Matters for Children
A beautiful neighborhood is not just visually appealing—it directly impacts children’s emotional well‑being, safety, and development. Clean, welcoming spaces help children:
- Feel safe walking to school or playing outdoors
- Build pride in their neighborhood and community identity
- Enjoy parks, gardens, and creative spaces that inspire imagination
- Experience reduced stress and increased confidence
- Connect with neighbors through shared community projects
Beautification projects also encourage outdoor activity, which supports physical health, social development, and mental wellness.
Ideas for Community Beautification Projects
If your neighborhood is considering applying, here are project ideas that directly benefit children and families:
- Community gardens that teach children about nature, nutrition, and sustainability
- Playground upgrades with safe equipment, shade structures, and inclusive features
- Public art installations created with local youth, celebrating culture and creativity
- Walking‑path improvements that make routes to school safer and more accessible
- Neighborhood clean‑up days that build teamwork and community pride
- Pocket parks or reading nooks with benches, murals, and greenery
- Lighting improvements to increase safety for families during evening activities
- Pollinator gardens that support environmental education and hands‑on learning
These projects do more than beautify, they strengthen community bonds and create environments where children feel valued and supported.
